Asus TUF Gaming FX505GT 15-inch Laptop (FX505GT-BB51-CB)

Asus TUF Gaming FX505GT 15-inch Laptop (FX505GT-BB51-CB)

This sturdy gaming laptop is all about affordability and, for the price, opens a lot of options for both gaming and creative pursuits. Several compromises were made to reach such a (relatively) low price point, however, so I expect perceivable slowdowns when loading games, rendering video, working on large documents and, in some cases, while multitasking. Still, if you cannot spend more, this machine could well be the best performer for the price.

The upgrade process is, sadly, undocumented, making it hard to tell for sure what can and cannot be done to boost performances. The hints I have do suggest that memory and storage could be sped up, fixing several of the bottlenecks holding this laptop back from where I`m standing.

Other Considerations

Here are a few things about this Laptop which could come as a surprise. For each point, you will find how to fix it (if it's an issue) and how much to budget for it. Not every point below will be a concern, but hopefully, we can keep your surprises to a minimum.

Slow storage. Once started, this Laptop should perform ok, however, expect it to take some time to start up, launch programs and open large documents. This could potentially be fixed by replacing the hard drive with a faster component but I couldn't confirm that it is indeed an option in this case.$60+

No Optical Drive. If you still use CDs, DVDs, or Blu-Ray disks on a regular basis, you will need an external drive to read them with this Laptop.$30+
