Dell Inspiron Small Desktop

Quick Description

This desktop computer is both cost-efficient and space-saving and an excellent choice for everyday tasks like homework and going online. It does lag behind a bit in terms of wireless performance, but I wouldn't consider it a deal-breaker unless you can't use a wired connection and one of the following feels familiar:

  • you're paying for uncommon internet speeds (> 150 MBps)
  • your desk is far from the router, and some of your other gadgets have trouble connecting from there
  • you regularly transfer large files over your home network

You do have several upgrade options available to you, but with a small case and light-duty power supply like this one, graphical upgrades are unlikely to easy or cheap. If you want more space, more memory or a better WiFi, however, the process is well-documented and relatively straightforward.

Other Considerations

Here are a few things about this stationary computer which could come as a surprise. For each point, you will find how to fix it (if it's an issue) and how much to budget for it. Not every point below will be a concern, but hopefully, we can keep your surprises to a minimum.

No Camera or Microphone. If your plans include skyping with family members, you would need a webcam or, for best results, a headset and microphone.$40+

Screenless. If you don't already have a monitor from your last computer, you could connect this stationary computer to a TV or get a new monitor.$120+

Assuming you are starting over fresh, you can expect to spend $250 on accessories, for a total cost of $980.

Programs, Apps and Games it will handle

Activity ratings are good but sometimes, you want to be absolutely sure your next purchase will be able to run a specific piece of software.

A 1 star rating means the program'll be usable (according to the developer's own definition; some are more demanding than others); 3 stars mean recommended specs are met with this device; 5 stars will means you will have plenty of overhead to handle uncommon uses of that program like mods, plug-ins and more.
