Asus CHROMEBOX Desktop model: M004U

Asus CHROMEBOX Desktop

Quick Description

Like Chrome books, this ultra-compact computer has limited functionality but if all you need is a way to browse the web, check your mail and participate to social media, this is a great option; it even supports quite a few apps so games and working on homework on this is definitely possible.

The device's small size makes it easy to hook up to a TV (I would definitely see this as a great kitchen computer) or at the back of a computer monitor to build your own all-in-one.

Other Considerations

Here are a few things about this stationary computer which could come as a surprise. For each point, you will find how to fix it (if it's an issue) and how much to budget for it. Not every point below will be a concern, but hopefully, we can keep your surprises to a minimum.

Input Devices not included. Which usually means you will have to supply your own Keyboard and Mouse. You might already have a set from your previous computer. Otherwise, you will have to buy new ones. $40-$219

Speakerless. This stationary computer needs external speakers to play sounds. Your options are to hook it up to a TV or a monitor with built-in speakers, use external speakers or a headset.$0-$500

No Camera or Microphone. If your plans include skyping with family members, you would need a webcam or, for best results, a headset and microphone.$40-$380

Screenless. If you don't already have a monitor from your last computer, you could connect this stationary computer to a TV or get a new monitor.$115-$650

No Optical Drive. If you still use CDs, DVDs, or Blu-Ray disks on a regular basis, you will need an external drive to read them with this stationary computer.$30-$150

Assuming you are starting over fresh, you can expect to spend $330 on accessories.

What it's capable of

Here are the tasks this computer can handle and how easily it'll breeze through it. A 5-star rating means it should handle the task at a professional level, a 1-star rating means it can do it, but it likely won't be a pleasant experience.

Programs, Apps and Games it will handle

Activity ratings are good but sometimes, you want to be absolutely sure your next purchase will be able to run a specific piece of software.

A 1 star rating means the program'll be usable (according to the developer's own definition; some are more demanding than others); 3 stars mean recommended specs are met with this device; 5 stars will means you will have plenty of overhead to handle uncommon uses of that program like mods, plug-ins and more.
